James Jeter, the notorious serial killer with a sixth sense, holds court inside London's Wormwood Scrubs Prison. He's the focus of the "North Wing Project." Under the influence of a hallucinogen, Jeter can create an alternative world known as "The Rift" containing the souls of his victims. Pardons are on offer to inmates who'll enter The Rift. Michael Keeler has nothing to lose and little to live for. He's sent into The Rift to learn the identity of Jeter's last victim.

It's a mission where the guilty can be redeemed, but at a price...

The Scrubs edition by Simon Janus Simon Wood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

It's been a long time since I read anything in the horror genre- and then within the last couple of weeks I have been compelled to read two novella's in the genre. The first one left me unsatisfied. The Scrubs was the second and I found it much more a satisfying read!

The Scrubs takes place entirely in the London's Wormwood Scrubs Prison- specifically in the "North Wing" where a somewhat sinister project is going on: sinister serial killer James Jeter is kept under the influence of a powerful absinthe derivative. As a result there is "The Rift" - a portal to an alternate world straight from the disturbed mind Jeter. Inmates in general population are allowed to volunteer for the "North Wing Project." Michael Keeler- an inmate with not much to lose volunteers even after the two previous volunteers were never seen again. He is given the initial assignment to document his time in The Rift while looking for the other two volunteers- but that mission changes when he finds himself fully enveloped in the dark corners of a serial killer's brain.

The story flowed well and I soon found myself right beside Keeler in the Rift. The idea of this plot intrigued me and I thoroughly enjoyed the open ending of the story.

The Scrubs edition by Simon Janus Simon Wood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I found this quick little Novella pick-up for my for 0.99.

The story is a bizarre story to say the least. It immediately challenges the reader's ability to not only suspend their disbelief, but throw it out the window. If you had a hard time accepting the premise of Christopher Nolan's Inception, where it spent two and a half hours convincing you of a person's ability to do it naturally, then The Scrubs will be a little hard to accept that a computer can do it.

I was able to set aside that disbelief, and accept the strangeness of the world inside the prisoner's mind. It was an odd place, but not as strange as I felt it could have been. There felt to be a very strong tether to the real world and I never felt too far away (as I did watching The Cell). To my surprise, I found myself liking the criminal they sent in better than the non-criminals that were running the project. I didn't expect that to happen, I was anticipating an HBO-style story where I wouldn't like anyone, but the author delivered, and I liked that. The criminal was regretful of his crimes, and made to relive and face what he did in the Rift world. The author threw a pretty cool twist at the end, and I appreciate that.
The Scrubs is an awesomely twisted story that reminded me of a mash-up between Richard Matheson's "What Dreams May Come" and "Alice in Wonderland"...if Alice was a meth-head sociopath.

It is a quick, fast paced read that moves along excellently.

Keeler is a prison inmate who has cut a deal to journey into the mind (literally) of a homicidal maniac in hopes of finding two previous volunteers. The world he steps into is demented and gruesome. The author's ability to come up with even more bizarre encounters in this world is both captivating and exciting.

As a new reader of Simon Wood's (Simon Janus) work...I am tempted to think that I will be hard-pressed to find a better story in his catalog.
I was lucky to stumble upon this bargain of a deal thru one of my groups. It is quite possibly the best $0.99 i have ever spent. I was pulled into the Rift straight from the first chapter and only quit reading because my eyes couldn't stay open anymore. I just finished it and although at first i thought the ending was unsatisfying i now realize that it couldn't have been any other way. My last thoughts as i finished the final paragraph were

Holy crap what a ride!

What the...???

Oh man London is in big trouble!

Is there another book??? I must scope immediately!!!

Read this book it is as my review title says and you won't regret it. I'm on the hunt for more stories by this author as soon as i hit submit for this review!!!
Simon Wood's novella "The Scrubs" is a nightmare landscape of violence instigated by official lack of ethics and morality. This story is so lean it almost hurts. It's a bullet to the brain, a shank through the ribs, mostly because it deftly showcases the utter lack of compassion man can show fellow man, especially in a prison incarceration scenario.

Michael Keeler is a robber whose "harmless" bank robbery went awry when he killed a young boy who wielded a toy gun he thought was real. Now a lifer, a con in the Wormwood Scrubs prison, he has accepted a volunteer assignment he knows will probably get him killed. Something strange is going on in the North Wing, some kind of government research. Keeler's seeking redemption for his one act of brutality, but he has no idea what waits for him behind the vacuum locks. He has no idea what the prison governor is up to, with higher-ups' blessing. And he has no idea what it might mean for everyone in the world.

Keeler, whose very name indicates some irony, is a tragic hero, out to right his own wrongs, and willing to become a guinea pig and also an agent of chaos. The lean, hard prose proves Simon Wood's place in the hazy areas between SF and horror and thriller should be assured for a long time. Somewhat reminiscent of "The Cell," the novella could easily have been a novel, though it packs plenty of action and social commentary in its short length. It's not an easy one to forget, and it will raise the hairs on the back of your neck when you realize that it's probably not as far-fetched as it first appears. What you'll mostly take away from it is the feeling that humanity is doomed because of its own indiscriminate greed and lack of morals.

-W.D. Gagliani, author of Savage Nights
